Rongai Route

Expedition Overview

The 9-day itinerary, which includes a 7-day trek, takes a less-crowded and more gradual way than the alternate routes, delivering a more secluded and delightful experience. Starting on the mountain's northern part, the Rongai Route provides a distinct route for those who prefer less congested paths and gentler slopes. It mixes serenity, diversified landscapes, and the excitement of mounting Africa's Roof.

Itinerary

  • Arrive at the airport, where you will be greeted by our agent and sent to your accommodation. You will meet our expedition leader in the evening for a tour briefing.

  • Distance: 7 km, Hours: 3-4, Habitat: Montane, Elevation (ft): 6,552 - 8,645.

Begin your journey through the lovely jungle at Rongai Gate, a less popular route that provides the serene ambiance of Kilimanjaro's northern side, during the hike you may see monkeys and rare bird species. Arrive at Simba Camp and take in the breathtaking views of the huge African plains.

  • Distance: 9 km, Hours: 6-7, Habitat: Moorland, Elevation (ft): 8,645 to 12,050

Hike through moorland. The Rongai route is relatively short and steep, making for shorter hiking times. During the hike, view Mawenzi Peak ahead.

  • Distance: 3 km, Hours: 4-5, Habitat: Moorland, Elevation (ft): 12,050 to 14,115

Begin your acclimatization day with a morning trek, followed by a relaxing afternoon and evening. While the trek is brief, it includes some steep terrain. The Mawenzi Tarn campground, located beneath Mawenzi Peak, offers spectacular views of both Mawenzi and Kibo.

  • Habitat: Desert, Elevation (ft): 14,115

Rest day to acclimatize your body to higher altitudes. Also, you may utilize this opportunity to explore the surroundings and absorb the natural atmosphere.

  • Distance: 9 km, Hours: 5-6, Habitat: Alpine Desert, Elevation (ft): 14,115 to 15,465

Begin your trek to Kibo Hut, the critical base camp for the next summit attempt. Retracing steps, then going west across the ridge and descending the slope, across the moon-like area known as the 'Saddle' wedged between the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, is the goal of this stage of the walk. Despite the lack of vegetation, the views are spectacular. You'll eventually reach the Kibo Huts, which are located at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Rest here before the last trek to the peak, which is set to begin at midnight.

  • Distance: 6 km ascent / 16 km descent, Hours: 6-8 hours ascent / 6-8 hours descent, Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit, Elevation (ft): 15,465 to 19,345 (and down to 12,200)

Ascend to Uhuru Summit at midnight to take on the greatest challenge. Follow the rocky walk to Gilman's Point on the crater rim. This strenuous portion comes before the last two-hour walk to the famous Uhuru Peak. Although not very tough, the altitude makes the trek long and arduous. Celebrate and photograph memories at the peak before descending to Horombo Hut, capping up a difficult but rewarding day.

  • Distance: 20 km, Hours: 5-7, Habitat: Moorlands, Elevation (ft): 12,200 to 6,250

Following breakfast, you will continue your descent to the Marangu Park Gate to get your summit credentials. A van will be waiting to transport you back to your accommodation.

  • Rest day / Transfer to the airport for your next destination.
